Just to add my 2 cents to the Lendrum discussion - my first wheel (and
first love) was and is my Lendrum DT folding wheel. I even have two of
them, not being able to resist the 25th anniversary walnut model. When
I got my first plain ol' maple Lennie, I got The Works - all four flyers
(very fast, fast, regular and plying). I've since traded in the very
fast (I do *not* spin cotton!) and the plying. The reason for the
latter is that I found it to be Very Hard Work to ply with that monster
flyer. There's a *lot* of yarn on it, and overcoming the inertia of all
that weight and keeping it going is more work than I want to do.
As for plying on the regular flyer - which I use 99.9% of the time - I
have no problem either way. And I don't change anything when I go from
spinning to plying. Drive band stays the same, as does scotch tension -
other than the normal slight adjustments which must be made as the
bobbin fills. I *do* oil the flyer periodically (where shaft touches
other parts as it spins), which seems to make things go more smoothly.
My other wheel is a DT Joy, which I take traveling with me, but Lennie
and Wally are my workhorses.
