Our butcher always freezes the hides for us. When we get them back, they're all rolled up and in a big plastic bag. Zack thaws them out, inspects them for holes (they won't 'fist' off the hides, unfortunately), and dumps the ones that are too 'holey'. The rest get salted. Our tanner doesn't need us to scrape them, though I've done that, too.

I don't know how long they can be safely frozen before there will be damage, but typically ours are frozen for about a two weeks before we get them, and there's no problem with that long. The only times we've had the wool start to fall out is when the hides *weren't* frozen, and they started to rot before they were salted.

who had to sell the hide right off her loom bench once, because it was just what the man wanted for his motorcycle :)
