Hi Holly -

The cloth *is* attached to the cloth storage beam, but that beam does not put tension on the cloth. It is the sandpaper beam that keeps the tension. You can start your weaving by laying the ends over the sandpaper beam, without tying onto the cloth beam. The sandpaper will hold the ends at the correct tension, and you just start weaving and rolling the cloth around the sandpaper beam. Then you have to transfer it to the apron to be wound on the cloth storage, if you want to continue without cutting the first item off.

I tie my warp to the apron right away, just like I do on other looms. If you have any questions, give a holler...... I might be able to help.
