Just to ask an impertinent question - what about "artistic freedom and
interpretation"?
I've seen so many nit -picky discussions of old paintings and the fiber
tools they show - I usually look at the illustration and usually see a
representation of textile production as the artist saw it. We all know that
Disney films do not portray spinning wheels well - why should Velasquez - a
major artist of his time - do his paintings as if they were textbook
illustrations? On the other hand, something like illustrations from
Diderot's 18th century encyclopedia of various industries should yield good
quality technical information.
We all know that portrait artists of the 18th and 19th centuries kept
unfinished paintings - of persons of standard stature, in clothes of the
day, missing hands, feet and faces. Artistic paintings are representations,
not technical drawings.
While the painting on the puzzle is lovely and would be fun to put together,
I question if we aren't putting too much thought into the analysis.
