Not sure what you object to about moth balls, but if it's the lingering odor from the naphthelene, then you could try using the 'other' moth balls (which also come in crystal and block form) and whose odor goes away rather quickly. This one says paradichlorobenzine on the label, and is the one that's used in a lot of closet deodorizers, sometimes with cedar or lavender scent added. It is less toxic (in the short run, anyway) than old-fashioned naphthelene, but neither is what could be called environmentally-friendly ;). It also does discourage mice.
