[Jari Williamsson:]
Your purchase of Igor seems to widely contradict that...

Why is that? Yes, I am aware that some think it's a hopeless program, and
in fact, on the Igor-Talk list, I have read things that I do find a bit
disturbing, especially relating to copy-protection, speed, and stability.
NoteHeads have explained those problems in various ways, but to be honest it
doesn't really wash all that well with me; after all, Sibelius or Finale users
never seem to have had similar problems. (Or *did* they, maybe, in the early
days of those programs, long before I was on the scene? The present problems
with Igor do not in my mind rule out a good long-term future, and I do not
regret having purchased it.)
However, from that same list over a couple of years I got the feeling the
program seemed very attractive and easy and quick to use, especially from the
QWERTY keyboard. I still hope Igor's present problems are only birthing/growing
pains, and that the concept behind it is fundamentally good, and that Igor does
well.
For the special, cheap, introductory price, I decided to take the risk and
purchase straight away; so, although I had a good overall impression of it, I
did (when all is said and done) purchase it from a viewpoint of substantial
ignorance about its inner detail. However, due to various computer difficulties
(the story behind that is long and boring, so I'll skip it here), I still have
not installed or used it. I wasn't even nearly ready to use it anyway, and
frankly was taking a bit of a gamble, and taking advantage of a *very* reduced
introductory price ($95 U.S., as againt a regular price of $295). Purchasing
Finale and/or Sibelius (in that order of preference) is something I have not
ruled out. I've almost completely ruled out Score for composing, although I'd
consider getting it for engraving work if I could find a substantial amount of
work that required it.
I stand by my statement that I tend to be precise and attentive to detail
(my purchase of Igor notwithstanding), and if I use Igor and find it will not
handle that to my satisfaction, I will go cool on it very rapidly indeed.
I recall, Jari, that you have strongly criticized Igor in the past for the
way it shows things like noteheads and curved lines. But I've heard people say
they think it does these well - so maybe there are differences of opinion about
which music fonts or styles of printing symbols are good and which ones bad.

                         Regards,
                          Michael Edwards.
