[Jari Williamsson:]

If you are being jumped upon by Philip, your error is that you aren't using
a Mac. :-)

Oh no - not *another* platform war! :-) I'm not buying into that. I don't
like Windows, but a whole history of circumstances has led to me using that
system - mainly learning computers on DOS, and creating many files with DOS
software.
I'm willing to learn the necessary details of engraving if I decide to go
into that. But I don't think the need to fit in with others extends to the need
to use someone's preferred platform. But it sounds as if something about my
e-mail style offended Philip, rather than the platform I use.

Every now and then on this list, the following holy wars are certain to
arise. I follow them with interest, sometimes amusement, as people get heated,
but would enter at my peril, and have got burned once or twice before on this
list for dipping my toes in.

Windows vs. Mac:
I use Windows, don't like it, but have no experience of Macs. At present,
it just isn't practical for me to change; but if I do at another time, I will
consider investigating Linux - probably not for music engraving, though, unless
suitable music software becomes available.

H.T.M.L. format vs. plain text:
I dislike H.T.M.L., and always post in plain text, but feel it's not worth
getting uptight with others for using H.T.M.L. I'm mystified why this topic,
above all others, arouses people's tempers to a completely unreasonable degree.
I accept that all mailing lists which are not configured to strip the code from
messages will *always* have members who insist on using it (or don't know how to
switch it off, or don't even know what H.T.M.L. is, etc.). So be it.

Format of e-mail, quoting style, attribution, etc.:
I have a certain style, and so does everyone else - and it may be different
from what I do in some respects. I don't care what people do, as long as what
they write is clear. I'm not interested in indulging in power trips trying to
make others do what *I* think they should, suggesting they're ignorant,
careless, etc., and am not all that receptive to those who try to do the same
with me.

Degree of TAN or O.T. topics tolerated, how they should be signposted:
I'm very easy on this, and ignore threads that don't interest me. Some of
the most O.T. things have been utterly fascinating, and this list probably has
the most interesting O.T. threads of all lists I belong to. I have a deep
dislike of any attempt by one person to silence another person or tell them what
topics they're allowed to discuss.

                         Regards,
                          Michael Edwards.
