I can't help you with the spacing, but my vote for best notation is 
for three quarters, which is what Bernstein used as well in that 
situation.

If you find out, let me know. Why is Finale poking around in my 
choice of notation options, and second-guessing me whenever I copy a 
measure? Grr.
