: I'm thinking about getting GigaStudio and using it for better
:sounds for Finale playback. I currently have a Soundblaster Live!
:card, and the "meeps" and "murps" that come out of that card when
:I play back my arrangements really limit my progress as an arranger.

GigaStudio could certainly provide some nice quality sounds to use with
Finale, but that seems like overkill simply for arranging purposes. Have
you considered simply getting some better quality Sound Fonts to load into
your SBlive card? For example, Sonic Implants
(http://www.sonicimplants.com) has some pretty good quality stuff, and it
would probably cost way less than, say, GigaStudio plus a solid Giga brass
library.

If it is just the card's A/D converters that are the issue, you could go
with a higher end sound card and a standalone Sound Font player (or some
other sample player) that could still be a big improvement over any stock
SBlive sounds, but a far cry from the expense of Giga plus some Giga
libraries.

: I realize I'll have to get a new soundcard to work with
:Gigastudio,
:but I was wondering if it would be a good idea to go the
:Gigastudio route
:for playback purposes.

My take is it's certainly not a bad idea -- GigaStudio is great stuff (I use
GigaStudio 96 mainly for piano, with the GigaPiano sound set, and also a
little for acoustic guitars, in my recordings), and, if you really need to
mock up a very realistic-sounding orchestra, say for a temp movie score or
low(er) budget movie or TV score than could be had with a real orchestra, it
is probably *the* way to go. But purely as a playback module for a notation
program? That seems something akin to driving a Ferrari to go to the
grocery store a block away. :-)
