I Could be wrong, but, I believe I heard that Apple rescinded their dictum that new MACs wouldn't boot into OS 9. Darcy has a good point, it's worth checing out.
What happened is this: Apple never went back on its statement that 2003 hardware would be OS X only. I can assure you that new hardware doesn't boot OS 9. What they did do is add a loophole to accommodate Quark users -- if you go to <http://store.apple.com> you'll see that they continue to sell OS 9-booting dual 1.25 GHz machines on their website. But this is the 2002 design (AKA MDD or "windtunnel"). They do not sell a 2003-design G4 tower that boots OS 9.

The only reason there is some confusion about the iMacs is because, unlike the towers and the new Powerbooks, the new iMacs did not undergo a motherboard redesign. So there is still the (slim) possibility that even though they are technically "new" machines, they might still boot OS 9. But -- I repeat -- the new G4 towers and the new 12" and 17" Powerbooks definitely do not boot OS 9.
