Darcy,Well, first off, if it's just the hard drive and not anything on the motherboard that's failed (not manufactured by Apple, BTW -- it would likely be Quantum or Maxtor, the same drives everyone else uses. Hard drives sometimes fail, that's just a fact of life.), that is extremely easy and inexpensive to replace. (<htttp://www.otherworldcomputing.com> has a good selection.) So you might consider hanging in there with your old Mac until all the software you rely on is updated for OS X -- which in the case of Finale will probably be July-August 2003. You will definitely save more money that way, since if you buy an OS 9-booting Mac now you will be paying a significant premium for last year's hardware. The new gear is a much better deal, so if you can hold out for a few more months you'll come out ahead.
Thanks to you and all the other people who responded. OS 9 is indeed the
sticking point here. (And for the first time ever, I'm really annoyed with
Apple, esp. since it's their HD that's failed on me.)
I hadn't thoughtSurely you live near a public library? Or have a sympathetic friend, neighbor, colleague, ...? (I mean, how are you reading this list?) You'll need access to the internet to buy this computer -- or a new hard drive, if that's the route you decide to go.
enough about the difference between running in classic and being able to
boot into OS 9. And daily contact with updated info via websites is
problematic without a computer.
I'll be looking for a 2002 Mac unless IIf replacing the hard drive isn't an option or you elect not to go that route, you can get the Dual 1 GHz G4 at MacMall <http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail.asp?dpno=590856> for $1994. (Be prepared to build some soundproofing for it.) Also, prices on Macs are usually pretty standard everywhere, but the associated bundles etc can vary, so it's definitely worth digging around a bit at <http://www.deal-mac.com> .
find an OS 9 IMac (which isn't really what I want.) So if anyone has any
great ideas where to look please let me know. You all are a great help!
Good luck!
