It's called Nomad. http://www.nomadworld.com/ 20GB hard drive. Records MP3 or uncompressed. Firewire or USB. Line/optical in. Firmware upgrades, etc., and third-party disk upgrades.
While I am happy that *someone* is making a hard-drive based MP3 player that also records digital audio to its internal HD, I gues it's a matter of opinion whether or not the Nomad qualifies as a "iPod-like device." (That, to me, implies something I can put in a shirt pocket.) But, hey, if they made this model with a proper mic input (like on a MiniDisc or portable DAT) *and* the smaller form factor of an iPod *and* gave it a larger, more informative LCD, they might really have something.
It seems obvious that this is the direction portable digital recording is moving in. The MiniDisc is based on obsolete technology, and DAT recorders are inferior to a hard-drive based recorder in every way (except, arguably, reliability, but I dunno -- there are good arguments on both sides). The next top-line iPod will have a 40 GB hard drive, and probably 80 GB next year and 120 GB the year after that. It's only a matter of time before recording with these things really takes off. Heck, as far as I know, it's happening today -- is there such a thing as a relatively portable mixing board that records digital audio direct-to-HD via FireWire? That's all you'd need (since the iPod works just as well as a portable FireWire HD).
(Did you mean line in *or* a mic?)
Er, yes. But actually, on reflection, I mean "and" -- you'd want both.
Here's info on using it: http://toddh.net/music/njb/
Interesting. Another disadvantage I hadn't considered is the limited battery life. 20 minutes??? The iPod's battery lasts 8 hours. But an interesting article, definitely -- thanks for the link.
