I don't quite follow this argumentation: It is true that HD based digital
recorders have advantages to DATs, but they still have some disadvantages as
well. Obviously reliability is actually _the_ factor in any recording
environment. But the main advantage of a DAT is unlimited recording
capability. Just eject the tape and put in another one. Can't beat that with
any HD based recorder - yet. Recording resolution is one thing where HD
based recorders can beat DATs, multi-track another (although there is ADAT).

Anyway, I haven't seen a single professional live recording setup where they
rely purely on HD systems (with one exception, see below). There will always
be a DAT or similar backup running, it's just too risky otherwise. Try
explaining to your customer that unfortunately your computer crashed, and
you only got the first 15 minutes of the show.

I was recently playing in a CD recording that was done on a Mac with MOTU
hardware, all very professional. They eventually ended up having to call us
again a month later as one movement had clicks in it, that were caused by a
computer hardware problem. They had to get the people together from all over
Germany for one session. The cost of this extra session was several thousand
Euros, it meant the CD couldn't come out at the planned date for a promotion
event, losing another fortune. This guy is never going to record only
computer based ever again.

When it works it's great - no copying from DATs to the computer, immediate
playback, even some editing during the sessions, you name it. When it fails
it's a disaster unless you have backup.
