The latter can now be avoided entirely by making sure to use Tobias's invaluable Modify Expressions plugin at some point to convert all the score's measure exprs. to note exprs., except for those intended to appear in every part or none.
When working with an orchestral score, I also find it far quicker and easier to use this plugin wherever (as is frequently the case) a dynamic mark is to be applied to most but not all staves, rather than set up a staff list.
Good tip -- that use of the TGTools plugin hadn't occurred to me. Thanks for sharing that.
