I can well understand Brubeck using the dotted rhythmic notation for the swung sections because much of his music has straight 8th's mixed in. Blue Rondo a la Turk is one such work -- in the 9/8 sections the 8ths are played straight, so he would need to show some distinction visually that the 4/4 bars should be interpreted differently.


What would be interesting would be to see how he notated 8th's in his pieces where all the 8th's are supposed to swing.
