Thanks to all who commented.

I think there was a slight misunderstanding in that people thought this was
about copyright laws (caused by my misleading title) which it wasn't.

The main part was that the engraver didn't really fullfill his part of the
agreement, but still wanted to be paid. To settle the matter it was offered
he'd give the Finale files away, so that at least someone else could finish
the job.

I am merely an outsider in this whole story, and whatever they decide
between them makes no difference to me. I either take the job or I don't.

My main question was mostly how restrictive others feel about giving away
Finale files. Are you mostly concerned about letting others have your
settings - in which case copying the music into a new empty document would
solve most of that worry. Or do you feel strongly about your ownership of
the Finale Data (not actually the files themselves but the music data within
them), and would not ever give even "settings-free" Finale files out without
extra payment?

(I have actually done jobs where I worked for another engraver on his
templates, and part of the deal was to hand over the Finale files in the end
- I never even thought of charging more for the job since it actually made
things easier for me).

I am actually undecided on this, and don't take any side. In this particular
case I think the matter has now been settled.
