I was delighted to see the announcement of Finale 2004 for Mac, mainly because, after years of begging and begging, "smart hyphens" have finally been included!!! Yippee!!!
And then I looked at the system requirements...Mac OS 9.x, plus at least 200 MB of empty hard drive space. Let's see...I'm running OS 8.6 on my Mac at home and at school (so I can still use Microsoft Works, which I haven't had any luck loading onto an OS 9.x machine)...plus, I have the original desktop Mac G3 at home, with not nearly enough hard drive space.
Having been a Finale user from version 1.0, I am very disappointed with this present situation concerning the new Finale 2004. I called tech support and was told that, because they went to OS 10 and a carbonized version, OS 8.6 is no longer supported.
What a letdown!!!

Martin,
No offense but at this point, you're lucky that *any* software company is releasing *any* new version that doesn't require OS X. OS 9 is long dead, and OS 8.6??? That's over five years old at this point. Most current Mac software requires OS X. Virtually all of it requires at least OS 9, and that's been true for some time now. So I'm not sure why you were expecting Finale 2004 to be the sole exception to the trend. Coda have supported OS 8.6 well past the end of its natural lifespan.
Also, hard drive space is very very cheap these days. You could very easily pick up a second (or replacement) internal HD for your beige G3, upgrade to OS 9 (or even OS X, if you like) and happily run Finale 2004. If you're not comfortable installing an internal HD, you could install a PCI FireWire card and get an external FireWire HD.
As for MS Works, it must be what, 7-8 years since that product was discontinued? I think perhaps it's time you considered switching to AppleWorks (which is far superior anyway), or MS Office 2001.
