This message from Robert Patterson came directly to me, but I think it was
intended for the list:

>This explanation begs the question. Explaining how a variant (I say
>"wrong") pronunciation came into being does not justify it in the same
>way that your previous explanation of "I could care less" attempted to.
>I think this explanation has merit, but I think the emergence of "I
>could care less" has a similar explanation. They both arise out of
>jaw-laziness.

>But understanding where it came from don't make it right.

Maybe so, but understanding it was my only interest. I never presumed to
"justify" it nor "make it right".

Unless I'm mistaken, the one assertion I've made on this topic is that
among those who profess their bafflement at the persistence of such usage,
most do so only to criticize and have little or no interest in coming to
understand same.

This discussion has only confirmed me in that belief.
