Hello,

I have discovered the built-in percussion map in FinMac 04: I set up an
orchestral score with percussion parts, and, when putting notes in and then
dragging them around, I found that the notes jump around weirdly, and each
is attached to a different sound.

I am in need of enlightenment from some of my wiser colleagues. My
questions are these:

1) Are Finale's choices for which "note" in the staff line to use for a
particular instrument reliable and standard ones for classical orchestral
writing? For example, they choose "two-ledger-line-above-staff" for wind
chimes, "diamond-note-on-top-line-of-staff" for suspended cymbal, and
"one-ledger-line-below-staff" for triangle. Are these standard in classical
orchestral writing? I always have just used, for single instruments, regular
note heads on the middle staff line, but labeled carefully -- and, of
course, I still have to label carefully anyway. For a set of instruments, I
have used some obvious combination (the five lines for five temple blocks,
or two of the space lines for two toms).

2) Is there a place in the online manual where these are identified? Right
now, I am just entering any old note, and dragging until I hear what I want
(pretty slow).

3) what would I do if the instrument weren't there? Like, for example, how
would I enter glockenspiel. This isn't obvious, since the notes jump around
oddly, and won't take sharps or flats -- or does that disappear
automatically if I put in a clef?

Thanking you all in advance,

David Froom
