Split points are absolute hell.  The UI is awful, non-wysiwyg, and it's 
buggy.  I avoid them as much as possible, even if it means breaking 
into smaller measures with invisible barlines and measure numbers 
redone.

I remember one file in which I had a split point that evaporated every 
time I made any adjustment to system margins.  Fortunately, the update 
layout function would restore it to where it was.

I think certain spacing commands will also kill the split point.  If 
you've got automatic spacing or automatic update layout turned on, you 
might try turning it off to see if that helps.

My condolences to you if you really can't avoid a split point. They're 
truly awful.
