Dear Giovanni,

Using FinMac2k4b I tried to duplicate your problem, but neither one occurred: Both Fs shared the notehead, and the stems were opposed. Is "Manual Positioning" set to "Incoporate"? If so, and you had for some reason moved the note heads apart, then they would remain so after a spacing command.

However, I see two things in your example to comment on: 1) Shouldn't the noteheads be separated when one is dotted and the other isn't? I would always separate them when one is a quarter and the other a dotted quarter. When one is a dotted note and the other is a beamed note, I suppose few would ascribe the dot to it. 2) It must be a special consideration when Layer 1 notes have stems down and Layer 2 notes have stems up.

I was really pleased to find that Finale now allows you to avoid the collision of unisons only when the noteheads are different. That solved the problem of half notes and quarter notes sharing the notehead position. However, there should be a way to have noteheads with dots separated from those that don't - especially quarters/dotted quarters and half notes/dotted half notes. The way to do it would be to have Finale consider dotted noteheads different from un-dotted noteheads.
What think you, collected Wizdom?

Thank you Hal
I agree on separating the noteheads when one is dotted and the other isn't, but, what I'm composing is related to special teaching purposes; freezing stems down in layer one also derives by importing full edited notation from another file. However, I found out what the problem is (at least, on my Mac).
If I'd entered the notes and then changed the option settings, no change on the score would appear; I deleted one of the layer's notation, changed the options, reinserted notation, and changes where visible on score; this, both for spacing and layers options.
Could someone test this on his on computer? I'm going to phone to finalemusic in a few days to ask about eps improvement, and I could eventually report something more.

Thank you

Giovanni
