I'm in OS9, not Classic, but my Midiman interface keeps crapping out on me as you describe, especially when I am running another MIDI application at the same time, like Cubase. I suspect a badly-written driver, but what can I do about that? This is what I do to get MIDI working again:
Under the MIDI menu, select MIDI Setup. Change the input device to something else, then change it back to what it is supposed to be. Then close the window.
If this doesn't work, then you might be stuck with your other solution>>
I'm using Midiman, too, but I never run any other applications. What you described does not help me. Only running OMS setup with Finale closed works.
