The only case where this would be acceptable is if all four parts were condensed onto one staff in a melodic AND rhythmic unison (that is, singing the same notes in octaves and in the same rhythm). Aside from that one situation, dynamics must be placed above each staff. Imagine being an orchestral conductor and having the strings all playing in rhythmic unison and having only one dynamic marking above the first violin staff. That would be very confusing.

And as for the beaming thing, speaking as a composer and a classically-trained singer, use modern beaming please. Modern singers these days that are going through music in schools are used to seeing their phrases being beamed with the so-called "modern beaming". It makes the line INFINITELY easier to read for the singer (especially the novice). It makes the rhythm immediately visible at a glance without having to stop and check flags for rhythms.

As with anything I post here, these are my opinions about beaming (the dynamics are pretty much standard, I would imagine). No flames please.

One other question - where a dynamic affects a whole SATB grouping (singing in rhythmic unison), is it acceptable/appropriate to place the dynamic above the stave in question, rather than each individual system?

....errr I mean the SYSTEM rather than individual STAVES....
