Even if I had the cash, I wouldn't upgrade, after the endless woes I've heard about it on this list!

See, folks! You've scared away another customer and warmed the hearts of Sibelius users! I wonder if some of these posts are from spies! ;-o)

I'll never knowingly warm the heart of a Sibelius user! Except with a decent malt, that is...

Well, by not upgrading you may well be warming the hearts of Sibelius users everywhere simply because they can see the demise of Finale coming sooner rather than later.

That means we'll all be jumping to Sibelius, with the concurrent cash infusion into their corporation which will then be able to pour more development dollars into making Sibelius even better.

Meanwhile, by not upgrading in large numbers, Finale users may THINK they're signalling MakeMusic that they're waiting for what they perceive to be a significantly improved upgrade. But we should all know that when two people participate in a conversation, the message one person is trying to send is often NOT the message the other person receives.

You may think you're voting with your purse to force MakeMusic to do a better job at upgrading, while in reality MakeMusic may well sit in the boardroom and look at a graph depicting the numbers of upgraders for recent versions and new purchases and notice that each recent upgrade has had fewer and fewer upgraders as well as fewer and fewer new purchases, and decide to let Finale die.

Customers' desired message by sluggish upgrade sales: give us significant improvement with fewer bugs and we'll be back to purchase by the thousands.

Corporate boardroom interpretation of sluggish upgrade sales: The market for finale has dried up, it's time to pull the plug and put ALL our development resources into SmartMusic.

Result -- we all lose and Sibelius wins.

Meanwhile, I'm using Finale2004 and appreciating the improvements while decrying the problems. Same as always. And I'll purchase the Finale2005 upgrade, too.

Just be sure that the message you're trying to send is the one being received.

Is the reverse not true, that reluctantly buying an upgrade sends the message "Keep up the good work, chaps"?
