For what it's worth, I have in front of me an old edition of a Debussy song that does exactly what I describe, with the left hand beginning in bass then switching to treble immediately after the time signature. I also have a more recent edition of the same song that does it as you suggest.


I think it's a matter of the editor/engraver, not the composer.
