True about it being awkward to ask a client to change his or her working habits. My consideration would be whether or not charges were by the hour or the page.
I was fortunate that one of the first scores my first client presented for me to do, was one which had a number of unique elements, and when presented with the opportunity to do this work, already knew what was going to be time consuming in Finale, and crafted the agreement between the client and myself in a manner that, while my fees are basically calculated on a per-page-of-manuscript basis, I do have the option, in the event of something as time-consuming as devising new fonts, or matching particular idiosyncracies of the client, of advising him that certain design elements will be charged by the hour, and that I hold the copyright of these design elements.
