I don't know if it's a US tradition or not, but that is how I learned to
type.

Despite my youthful appearance, I was one of the last people at my high
school to take typing class--complete with the two spaces after a period
rule. After collge I had a boss with a pet peeve for two spaces after a
period when typing on the computer and I had to modify my typing. You
wanna talk about a hard habit to break...

i have always perceived this as being specific to the states, it
_seems_ to me that all the messages where i have noticed this habit
were written by americans (except for a friend of mine who whacks the
hell out of the space bar with her thumb, causing 2-3 spaces between
each word!). i am curious though, are there any non-americans who
have done this, or still do this, and is it (was it ever?) a common
practice in your country as well?

okay, no silly jokes about smallcase chippewa being the last person
one should trust to understand typographic standards, eh? three
spaces following periods, two following question and exclamation
marks...
