MIDI can work in Classic quite well. I've got a MIDISport USB interface from MIDIMAN that has no problem going from Classic to OS X. Others on this list have recommended the same brand. I also recommend using OMS in Classic rather than FreeMidi because it seems more stable (and is generally more compatible).

The soft samplers you ask about all work in OS X. I find that Reason is the most stable, but the factory sounds are not the best you can get. Kompakt still has issues with crashing, using up too much CPU and producing lousy sound when using direct from disk playback.

Reason has an OS 9 version that works well, but the problem is that you won't be able to access this with Finale 2003 in Classic. I have, so far, found no way to use inter application MIDI in Classic or when using a mix of Classic and OS X.

Finale 2004 and Reason do work well together in OS X, but here you will find that the more memory you have, the better. 1 Gb is pretty much the minimum needed. I think that the model of laptop you are looking at has a maximum of 1 Gb. The newer 1.33 & 1.5 GHz, 17" Powerbook can hold 2 Gb of Ram, but the caveat here is that the needed 1 Gb Ram chips are hard to find right now (& at a cheap price).

To sum up: You cannot get Finale 2003 in Classic to talk to a softsampler on the same computer. Finale 2004 in OS X can do this, but you need lots of memory to make both programs run efficiently.

Many people who have upgraded their equipment to be able to run OS X now find themselves with an extra, but older computer. Consider using this older machine to run a softsampler, synth or other audio or MIDI program to connect with your new computer.

May I impose with a bit more follow-up? Since you've
convinced me to "come in...the OS X water is fine" :)
I'm now starting to look at the 17" Powerbook with a 1
Ghz processor and 1 Gb of RAM.

-May I assume that the issues with running Finale in
Classic mode and MIDI I/O have been solved or at least
worked around?
-Can anyone recommend a rock solid MIDI interface for
Classic MIDI I/O within Panther?
-How about a relatively stable soft sampler (Kompakt,
Reason, Personal Orchestra) that interfaces well with
Finale?

Thanks again in advance,
Eric Richards
