Well, I am pretty sure you can put another disk inside the G4 box easily,
but perhaps someone else can tell you more. That would be cheaper than an
external Firewire drive (the external is more flexible I guess). You could
put your complete OS X system on the extra drive. That way you will not mess
up your working system, and can start learning. Eventually you can move over
all your documents, but you could just as well leave them where they are. (I
still keep most of my docs on my OS 9 partition, simply because I haven't
had the need to change anything.)

That said, I do understand that people who need a working computer to earn
their income are hesitant to experiment while everything works. However,
Finale is one example where you are now stuck if you don't move on. Most of
the software I use these days has gone X-only now, and rightly so.

Besides, OS X is actually very good to work with (at least since the Panther
upgrade) and very stable. You will have to adjust in certain respects, but
eventually you will see the benefits. Finale's stability is one of them.
