thanks to all for the sensible suggestions. would it be possible with an external drive to partition it (OS9/OSX) and install one of my finale registrations on the portable drive, in order to be mobile for working in different places (i have a tower G4 and won't be getting a portable soon)?
No. As far as I know on the Mac the registration is done with the Ethernet
MAC address and not with the harddisk.

I should note that I *did* have to re-register Finale on my computer after completely wiping the HD. (I did not have to reinstall after an "archive and install" type installation, even though I did not preserve users.)
However, that would have been my third installation (that is, if the original installation had still been active -- I also have Finale on my girlfriend's laptop), but I had no trouble re-registering the computer whose HD had been wiped, so who knows?
Anyway, as I said earlier, I suspect you are right, that installing Finale 2004 on a portable HD will not result in a portable installation. Jef will still have to register and un-register the individual computers (or just deal with the 30-day time limit).
