Hi Andrew,

IIRC, in OS 9 you had a habit of storing documents in unconventional places -- for instance, all Finale files in your Finale folder. This is not a good idea in OS X, precisely because of the permissions issue.

I too have a habit of storing documents in "unconventional" places. My solution to this was to create a folder inside my user folder which I have given the same name that I gave to my entire hard drive on my former Mac. I pretend that this folder *is* my hard drive (I even changed the icon...) and I have it divided up into subfolders accordingly. Every file I ever write directly goes in there somewhere. When the system writes files, whether it's installing an application, making preference files or whatever, it puts them wherever it likes but not in *my* folder.

The system gets what it wants, and I still feel like I have control over how I organize all of my files. As far as I can tell, nothing gets put into that folder except what I put there intentionally

You should put all your documents in the Documents folder inside your user folder. (Obviously, you can still have sub-folders that are organized according to your preferences, for instance "Finale documents," "Photoshop documents," etc.)

I was about to say that I don't have a Documents folder, but now I see that I do. It's still sitting there in my user folder, but I never use it. Peeking inside, I see that a few applications have put junk in there. That's exactly why I don't use it. I don't want any applications mixing their stuff with mine.
