Andrew--
Do you have something in your log-in items that requires an internet connection?
To check:
1. Bring up System Preferences 2. Click Accounts 3. Click your account 4. Click Start Up Items
Look and see if anything in the list (if any) might be requiring you to dial up.
The only thing in there is something called iCalAlarm Scheduler. I have no idea what this is, but it doesn't sound like the sort of thing that would want to get on the internet. Shd. I uncheck it.
And apropos of OSX annoyances, what can I do to stop being sandbagged by permissions-denials almost every time I want to overwrite or delete a file? Nobody but my wife and I use my computer, and I would like to totally zero-out (or max out, depending on how you look at it) every permission on the machine. Part of the problem is that whenever I update a file from Finale 2K2/OS9 to Finale 2K4/OSX, tight permissions are created for it, and I simply don't want or need that kind of security.
Is there any way I can get rid of this crap? It's gotten very, very old.
