In fact, much simpler. Enter four quarter notes, select the measure with mass mover, select TGTools Music->Tremolos..., (if necessary enter the number of beams and the same number of beams connected to the stems) and click go. Done.

I just did it, and it does exactly what is wanted.

Simple put the half-notes in as 4 quarter notes and use mass-mover to change the noteheads to open noteheads so they LOOK like half-notes.

Or define a tuplet so that 4 half-notes are played in the space of 2 half-notes, and omit the bracket and number.

Or uncheck the Check for Extra Notes option in either Speedy or Simple entry.

Well, I can see this, but there were a total of 4 half notes in each measure, and I don't think the application would accept them into one measure before you could do the smart shape lines. Am I missing something? Otherwise, it sounds like a pretty quick workaround.

The accompaniment's first measure contained a measure of 4 16th note groups in Common time. How does one come up with the shortcut notation in such a case?

Well, one way to do this is to put in the two half notes on the appropriate pitches, and define one (or more, if neceesary) smart shape line to the appriate width(s), and us the smart shape lines to create the beaming. I found this to be quite a pleasing method, as the lines were note attached, and stretched, or contracted if the notes were moved.
