You have missed my point entirely. I was not arguing that your dictionary of choice will list the accentless spelling as its spelling of choice. I was arguing that an evolution to that spelling is logical and plausible to an extent which is of a fundamentally different nature from the wrongness of the blatant misspelling of "viola".

The Webster's does give the variant spelling without the accent, but not as the main entry.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the Webster's", since several dictionaries use that name. Merriam Webster's 10th Collegiate Dictionary should both spellings with no preference between the two.


Even if you acknowledge only one dictionary offering only a "variant" spelling, it makes my point. Even if it is only a marginal variant, accentless "voila" is still acceptable in a way that "viola" is not.
