It makes plenty of sense to me, but I do agree that any solution will be kludgy at best.
The most obvious solution has already been mentioned several times: adding the zero as an Expression. But I don't see that this is at all kludgy. It looks perfect and takes no time at all to do. It could even be built into the Default file for the duration of the project.
