It is a tough question.
"Haikus" sounds so wrong to me, too.
But we do count Haiku in a special way.

I don't know if you want to hear this but the way Haiku is used in US is
already inaccurate.  For a starter, Haiku must contain a word for the
season of the moment.  It is tough for the Stats those which doesn't have
any sense of season :-)

This isn't far off.  If you live there for 3 month, you can speak fairly
easily, but reading and writing usually takes more than 10 years.  I used
to do copying/Finale work for John Zorn.  I couldn't tell who he was when
he phoned me in Japanese!
