Aha, I just checked the original file, and there WAS a hidden note in that first measure. It's a whole rest in the voice part and for some reason I had made it a real whole rest. I see no reason for it, but maybe in an earlier draft I needed it there to optimize the voice staff in the first system. (I made this file months ago, so I don't remember.) Then when I cleaned out the voice staff to make the cello part I neglected to select that bar since I assumed it was already empty.
Anyway, I thought it was possible to create a multi-measure rest out of a measure even when it isn't empty, but trying it out now, I see now that isn't the case.
