Solesmes prepares, maintains and publishes the chant books for the official current liturgy. The LU is for the old liturgy, which, as I've explained in other messages, is no longer current, but which is permitted under special allowances in orders from the Pope to bishops worldwide. That order allowed the above-board reprinting of the LU, which had previously been available only on something of a black market among traditionalists at costs in the range of $200-400 each. It really is a big book, nearly 1,100 pages, if I'm remembering correctly, and on very fine paper. It also requires a quite substantial spine because of its usage (in any mass or office, you're jumping around from front to back to middle many times; were it not so, the book would be twice as thick), so $107 is not a bad price at all, assuming they are maintaining the standards of binding and paper quality that the copies from just before the Second Vatican Councils represented. -- David W.
