I'm not sure about the technical side of app recognition, but every
time I update Finale (from 2005a to 2005b, for instance), I have to
change the assignment of all the shortcuts to apply to the new program
name. This is easy to do in one batch operation, though.

The hard(er) part was going from 2004 to 2005, where I wanted to keep
all of my existing shortcuts in 2004 but also copy them into a new
"2005" set. I had to duplicate all of the existing shortcuts (which
appended a "(2)" to the end of each shortcut name) and then reassign
the duplicates to 2005. The time-consuming part was renaming all the
2005 shortcuts individually (removing the "(2)"), but only because I'm
anal enough to care about my macro names looking clean.

Life would be so much easier if only (3/2)^12=(2/1)^7.
