I just saw: Apple has put a new update, 10.3.9, on their site. See:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1039.html
Among other things, itis meant to improve Mail, Safari and Stickies application reliability: this might help.

How come abbreviated is such a long word?

Things to try:
1. It could be damaged cache files. Go to your user folder, open the Library folder and rename the folder called "caches" to something else ("old caches", whatever). The OS will create a new "caches" folder: if the programs then work you can delete the old folder.
2. If this doesn't work, try creating a new user account. If the programs work with the new user account, copy all your documents into the new account and then delete the old account.
3. If this doesn't work, the only thing I can think of is a system
re-install. But maybe somebody else will have other ideas before you go
so far.

Well, with that opera finally finished (over 2 years of work for the
client), and taxes filed (*^%$*&^%*&), I have a significant amount of
down
time. So I now turn my attention to finally moving things here from
OS 9 to
OS X. I've had Panther 10.3.8 installed for quite a while and know my
way
around it, having used it now and then for various reasons. But the
bulk of
my time has been mired in OS 9 since the opera was based in Fin 2K3.
But every time I try to do anything in OS X, it seems there is a problem where I just say, screw it, I'll do this in 9 and get it done eons faster. But now I WANT to make this move happen.
So here's the latest issue: proprietary Apple programs won't launch
anymore. Safari, Mail, etc. just won't come up. They did before
because
I've used them. In fact, I found that Safari was the only program for
the
Mac that would actually access the USPS Click Postage site. Also,
Sherlock
unexpectedly quits immediately after launching, when loading Internet.
I've run DiskWarrior 3.02, no problems. TechTool Pro 4, no problems. Repaired Permissions till I'm blue in the face. Nada. Up on the Apple site there are discussions about fonts causing similar problems. Man, that's a minefield in OS X, but I have no duplicate fonts installed.
Any suggestions out there? I know there are a lot of very
knowledgeable
minds here that are quite OS X savvy. So I'm trying to tap in here to
see
if I can make this move actually happen. Finale 2005 beckons ya know.
Thanks in advance to all.
