As far as the WiFi goes, one thing to definitely NOT get is a WiFi card that is 802.11a (or "Wireless A") only.

99% of all WiFi hotspots are either 802.11b ("Wireless B") or 802.11g ("Wireless G")-compatible -- and, as David said, Wireless G hotspots support Wireless B devices, and vice versa.

Even if the university has a Wireless A network (unlikely), you need to get a combined Wireless A/G card so she can use hotspots off-campus as well.

and even WiMax coming down the pike, a completely different
(and incompatible) standard.

I very much doubt this standard will ever catch on.
