Also, in terms of an eventual upgrade, am I missing something really big having as old a version as 2002? I'm sure it will serve to learn the program, but I hope it will not make it difficult for people here to advise when necessary.
Yes, you are missing many things really big, but it's hard to tell whether you need them, and whether you need them immediately.
I am not sure whether 2k2 had Engraver slurs (which automatically avoid all sorts of things). You are definitely missing the new autoplacing Expressions. There were major improvements for Tuplets and repeats in 2k5. Simple Entry has seen a major overhaul (I believe making it much more similar to Sibelius note entry, but I don't have much experience with Sibelius). Human Playback has improved the playback of scores by a lot.
If I were you I would wait a little and upgrade to Fin2k6 when it comes out, usually in late summer, I believe. It probably won't make a difference to the upgrade price (you may even get an early reduction if you order right when it comes out), and that way you won't have to think about upgrading again in a few months.
However, if you plan on working a lot in Finale the upgrade now may still be worth it in terms of saving time with your scores. It all depends...
