Even after 1900 - Bartok makes a very clear pedagogical point of it toward the end of Mikrokosmos I - contrasting two pieces in 3/2 and 6/4. The 3/2 is 3 x 2/4 and 6/4 is clearly 2 x 3/4. The relationship of 6/4 to 6/8 as a compound duple meter is to my mind beyond much argument. 3/2 is clearly simple triple.

Is it? I doubt that for most music written before 1900, after that I guess things are a little more complex.

I'd be interested to know about any piece in 6/4 before 1850 which is clearly 3x2/4, do you know one?
