I don't see listed anywhere on the Garritan site a viola da gamba
sample, so I'm assuming one has to use one of the cello samples. I
don't see that as an awful problem, but it does raise a major issue
with automatic implementation of bow changes.

The bow direction for viola da gamba is the reverse of the cello,
because the gamba bow is held underhand. That is, the strong bow is
the push bow (i.e., up bow), while the weak bow is the pull (down
bow).

What happens in a score with bowings in it? Are these interpreted
accordingly? Or is there no different between down bows and up bows?

Is the only workaround to apply human playback with the gamba part
bowing definitions reversed (i.e., the push bows marked down bows and
the pull bows marked as up bows), then revert to the correct bowings
for printing?

Or is this something that is irrelevant in the first place, or that
can be worked around in some other fashion?

And does anyone know if Garritan has any plans to offer a set gamba
samples? It would sure be a nice thing, though I doubt there'd be
more than a handful of people in the world who would use them!
