I know, I know ProTools is much, much more expensive.
Wait a minute, no, you can buy it for 600$... Then it _can_ erases your
takes, or the take you record one hour ago with some guest musician
playing...

Firstly, it is very unlikely that the Kronos Quartet would be recorded with ProTools. Secondly, I have had this happen when my orchestra was recording for WDR (the biggest classical music producer in Europe; I think it must have been SonicSolutions, but it could have been after the move to Sequoia, can't remember) They had major computer problems and eventually recorded to DAT. Another time they were having hardware problems and the backup DAT didn't work - man were they scared they'd loose a take. That was in their own studio, not on the road.

Computers crash, and even the most expensive software crashes. When I do recordings I backup my HD every hour or so to two external ones, and make a DVD backup every night. So far I have never had a problem, but some time in the future I will.

Oh, and the producer would have said "sorry guys, we had some backgound noise in there, have to do it again, but I am sure we'll get an even better take". The secret to a good recording is keeping the atmosphere positive.
