Right, but the GPO is not an option listed on that pull down in the
second screen, as it always has been up till now

GPO can be turned on and off under the MIDI menu -- on the Windows
platform the choices you need are:
Play Finale Through Native Instruments VST
and
Native Instruments VST Setup.
Using the Setup Wizard, on the second screen, the one where you
choose the instruments, there's a drop-down menu at the top (at
least in the Windows version there is) where you can select either
Garritan Personal Orchestra or SmartMusic SoftSynth (which actually
allows you to define any soundfont you want -- you're not just
stuck with the SmartMusic sounds as long as you have other
soundfonts on your computer.)
I imagine it's similar on Macs.
