ME was a completely different version of Win9x, with the updated 
driver model that was created for Win2K and a lot of the OS file 
protection and self-healing that was also found in Win2K. I can't 
remember if Win2K or WinME got them first, but my understanding is 
that the innovations were the product of a single development 
initiative at Microsoft and incorporated into the two different 
kernel versions of Windows.
