I decided to take my own advice and use tuplets to keep Finale happy
about independent time sigs. For me it was fairly painless, but one step
requires fairly deep Finale knowledge.
So here is the setup. The global meter is 6/16, while 2 staves overlay
2/8 in the same time. Originally, I had done it the straightforward way,
but I was having all the problems described earlier with positioning
smart shapes and assigning articulations. (Besides those, selecting
partial measures is painful too, esp. on multiple staves.)
I changed the independent meters to 6/16 displayed as 2/8. Even leaving
"Rebar Music" unchecked, Finale still perversely destroys all the beat
charts. Working around this step requires editing the ETF of the score
in a text editor. Basically, I saved the score as ETF before changing
any independent meters, then changed the meters, then saved it to a
different ETF. I then used a text editor (BBEdit in this case) to
replace the beat charts in the new file with those from the original.
This step is not for the faint of heart but with care it is quick and
painless.
The beat charts are the lines in the file that start with ^BC(nn) where
"nn" is the measure number. When editing ETFs, always keep a backup of
the .mus file from before you edited it's ETF, until you are sure
everything is okay.
Finally, I added invisible tuplets to all the bars that needed them.
This is easy using a tuplet metatool and/or my Mass Copy plugin. I did
lose some custom beamings when I assigned the tuplets, but my Beam
Selection plugin restored them quickly.
Everything works beautifully now.
