While Finale has always orphaned temp files on a non-predictable basis, I can't say that it's every actually caused any problems. It's certainly often a *symptom* of a problem, but I've not found that any of the problems I've ever had with Finale (2.01, 3.52, 97, 2K3) have ever been *resolved* by cleaning up temp files. And if you want to clean them up on a regular basis, you can schedule it with the Windows Scheduler or run it from your Startup Folder, or call a batch file from the Run key of the registry, or alter your Autoexec.bat to call it. But I don't really think it will make a significant difference in Finale's performance. However, the Mac problems may very well related to the way Finale interfaces with its temporary data structures (whether on disk or in memory). Indeed, it's exactly the kind of problem one would expect from such a breakdown. Given that Finale 2006 is well-known to have faster save/autosave times, it's very likely that in Finale 2006 MakeMusic altered the relationship between Finale and its temporary data structures (perhaps keeping more of them in memory, perhaps just re-organizing the way the data is stored in the them files on disk). But deleting Finale's temp files when Finale is not running is extremely unlikely to have any effect on this kind of bug at all. -- David W.
