I haven't done exactly what you outline, but I've made use (for other
purposes) of a technique that I think would meet your needs perfectly.
I define a custom smartline to have the exact same width as a beam, and
towards the end of the overall setting process, use this smart line in
place of the beam, carefully aligning the beam so it exactly fits over
any existing secondary beam.
